Timber cutting, shipbuilding and fishing were the industries that first attracted European settlers to the region. Since that time it has become a popular tourist location for its hinterland national parks, beautiful subtropical rainforests and some 40 kilometre coastline beaches for surf, swimming, snorkelling and diving.

The region also boasts historical villages of considerable charm and character and an idyllic climate attract visitors all year round.

  • Oysters farmed in Wallis Lake, a local specialty.
  • Tobwabba Art Gallery, which showcases outstanding contemporary Aboriginal art.
  • Australia's only Amish store, at Nabiac, 22 km north-west of Forster on the Pacific Highway.
  • A dolphin cruise, either on the lake or out to sea.
  • The fabulous views from Coorabakh National Park.
  • Try your hand at fishing or surfing at the Old Bar and Old Wallabi Point, 15 km south-east of Taree.
  • Relax at the beautiful beach at Saltwater, just west of Old Bar.
  • Explore sub-tropical rainforest at Wingham Brush Nature Reserve.
